This hypoeutectoid steel (stampings) with 0.57% carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 0.47 – 0.55%) was austenitised at 830 °C for 30 min and quenched in oil. Tempering was carried out at 380 °C, 2h with subsequent air cooling. The microstructure consists of tempered martensite. The surface hardness of this shell hardener is 660 HV 5 and the core hardness 290 HV 5.
It was etched on former austenite grain boundaries with PAG QT². The etching time was 2x 5 min.
