Carbonitriding is used to achieve acceptable surface hardness in (low cost) unalloyed steels. The core microstructure consists of a dual phase microstructure as the carbonitriding temperature has been quenched. The lower carbon core is only partially austenitised.

  • Surface hardness: 499 ± 2.0 HV 0.2
  • Core hardness: 179 ± 11.2 HV 0.5

The CHD hardness cannot be determined as the hardness does not reach the limit hardness of 550 HV.
