Wire rope friction martensite

Etching3 % Nital

This broken wire rope shows friction martensite (light-coloured layer) on the surface. Friction martensite can occur when the wire rope is pulled over a sharp edge under load, for example. The white layer is the starting point for a crack. The basic structure has a typical, patented structure. In the unetched state, there is an undesirably long non-metallic inclusion.
