The stainless martensitic chromium steel is used, among other things, for knife blades, surgical instruments, wear parts or rolling bearings. Here it was plasma-nitrided without a compound layer. In the unetched rim zone, the incipient transformation of the (white) carbides into (brownish) nitrides can be seen. The precipitation of tiny chromium nitrides in the thin diffusion zone leads to chromium depletion of the matrix and therefore to stronger etching.
