This sample was gas nitrided. For a better contrast of the compound layer to the embedding medium, the sample was tightly wrapped with an Al foil and warm embedded. More information about this method can be found here [LINK].
The compound layer shows a typical pore fringe. The diffusion zone is etched slightly darker. The basic structure consists of ferrite and pearlite and contains some inclusions and blowholes.
