This hypereutectoid steel (sheet material with cross-section = 2 x 30 mm) with 0.98 % carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 0.95 – 1.05 %) was austenitised at 900 °C for 30 min, quenched in water and then tempered at 250 °C for 2 hours. The austenitisation temperature was above the temperature intended for this material (900 °C instead of 800 °C), so it was overheated.
The microstructure consists of pure martensite. The average core hardness is 707 HV5.
