The hardness of iron-based blasting powder can be well determined by metallographic sectioning. This also gives an impression of the size distribution and form of the powder and the possible presence of hollow spheres. The chemical composition was determined by XRF, the carbon content by Leco. The powder in the sample photos contains 0.9% C, the average hardness is 850 HV0.1.
