This hypereutectoid steel (bar stock with ⌀ = 16 mm) was annealed at 950 °C for 1 hour to produce a cementite network and then cooled slowly in the furnace.
The specimen was slightly decarburized at the edge, leaving isolated bright ferrite grains in the pearlitic matrix up to a surface spacing of about 300 µm. Only at high magnification is the achieved cementite network visible in the core, which has formed along the pearlite grain boundaries.
The decarburized zone at the edge of the specimen has a hardness of 240 HV0.5, while the core hardness averages 330 HV0.5.
