In this component the martensitic transformation is incomplete. In addition to tempered martensite and white, round carbides, approx. 15 % finely streaked perlite (troostite) is present. This indicates that either the quenching rate was not sufficiently high or that the sample was hardened at too low a temperature or for too short an austenitisation period.

The core hardness is 624 ± 2 HV1.
