The pipe made of modiefied 1.4740 (less C, more Cr) was solidly nitrogenized. Aluminum and chromium nitrides have formed throughout the cross-section. Near the surface, primary chromium carbides were first converted to chromium nitride Cr2N, then to the more nitrogen-rich CrN. Just below the surface, the chromium nitrides were finally dissolved in favor of oxidation and sulfidation. Silicon and chromium are preferentially oxidized.
