This hypoeutectoid steel (stampings) with 0.57 % carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 0.47 – 0.55 %) was austenitised at 830 °C for 30 min and quenched in oil. Tempering was carried out at 380 °C, 2h with subsequent air cooling. The microstructure consists of tempered martensite. The surface hardness of this shell hardener is 660 HV5 and the core hardness 290 HV5.
It was etched on former austenite grain boundaries with PAG QT². The etching time was 2x 5 min.
