2.4879 | G-NiCr28W Fracture of a Furnace Roll
| Numeric designation | 2.4879 |
|---|---|
| Chemical designation | G-NiCr28W |
| State | Fracture of a Furnace Roll |
| Etching | Kalling 2 |
The furnace roll broke after a short time, caused by large radial shrinkage cavities which reduce the cross-section by up to 2/3. After fracture, the fragment was overheated which caused the isolation material inside to locally react with the roll surface and to form a low-melting (eutectic) Ca-Fe silicate phase that ran into a few cracks and shrinkage cavities.
