The sand-cast component made of AlSi9Cu3(Fe) (prototype) failed in the test; several separate fatigue cracks originated from shrinkage cavities and gas bubbles. Unusual fatigue fracture without vibration striations, but clearly different from (usually ductile) final overload fracture.
