Near eutectic composition of 66 mass % Bi and 34 % Sn with a melting point of about 160°C. (The eutectic is 42 % Sn and 139°C). The duplex structure consists of a Bi-rich (approx. 1.5 mass % Sn) and an Sn-rich phase (approx. 4 % Bi). The latter is attacked during etching, while the Bi-rich phase remains bright.
The hardness is only 19 HV0.05.
