GJS-SiMo 40-10 | 5.3115 | Graphite classification and fracture pattern in tensile test

Numeric designation5.3115
Chemical designationGJS-SiMo 40-10
StateGraphite classification and fracture appearance in tensile test

Low alloyed ferritic nodular cast iron according to EN 16124 for high temperature applications. This alloy contains 3.8-4.2% Si and 0.8-1.1% Mo.  The molybdenum addition increases the high-temperature strength, the Si content improves the oxidation resistance.

The microstructure of this ductile iron is almost purely ferritic. Interdendritic Mo-rich M6C carbides are surrounded by fine precipitates of probably cementite. In places there are also carbide films on grain boundaries (Fig. 14). The minimum tensile strength is 510 MPa, the minimum elongation at fracture is 6%.

Graphite classification according to EN ISO 945-1:2019

  • Graphite form VI
  • Arrangement A
  • Guide number for the size range: 6

The SEM images show a force fracture by tensile test. There is partly cleavage fracture and partly honeycomb fracture.
