Meteorite fragment Namibia
Chemical designation | Meteoritenfragment Namibia |

Etching | 5% Nital |
This fragment of a meteorite, which was found in Namibia in 1836, contains approx. 9% nickel. The structure consists mainly of coarse ferrite plates in Widmannstätten arrangement, which contain approx. 7% nickel by mass (mineral name: kamacite). The ferrite has precipitated from austenite during the very slow cooling process. Narrow areas of austenite have remained between the ferrite plates, in which the nickel has accumulated to 20…40 mass % (mineral: taenite). This structure is typical of iron-nickel meteorites.
